Could it be that Google has beaten Microsoft to the punch? As you can see here and read more about here, Google has introduced a way to organize your computer much like Google organizes your Gmail, much like Microsoft's promised WinFS was going to do for Longhorn users, until Redmond decided to delay rolling out the new file system.
Some industry analysts see this as a security risk on par with Gmail, others simply see a greater brand awareness campaign. I have to wonder if this doesn't represent the first tentative steps toward a Google browser, a rumor that persists despite no word of it from Google. They are perfectly positioned to become a major threat to both Microsoft and AOL. The term "to Google", meaning to search online for something, has already become ubiquitous among forums, newsgroups and geeks. With that sort of market saturation, they're already on the road to becoming the 3rd major power on the Internet. Whether or not they garner the same reputation as MS and AOL is yet to be seen. A third evil empire? I hope not.
I'm currently beta testing Google search, along with Orkut and pretty much anything else Google tosses my way. I'll report back on how well it works and what I observe as to its effects on my system resources. I already have Power Desk 6 and keep my files and folders very organized, so my usage may be limited. But I'll put it through its paces as best I can and let you know what I find.
